Enjoy free family fun with ‘Movies in the Park’ in ... - ABC 15 News

TEMPE, AZ -- Are you looking for some free family fun? Then the city of Tempe has something for you.

Movies in the Park takes place every Friday night at Kiwanis. Families can grab the blankets and popcorn and catch a flick for free.


The city's Parks and Recreation Department has been putting on the event since 1979.

They use one of the largest inflatable screens in the state to play the movies on.


Movies start around 7pm and are shown by the fire pit on the west side of the lake.


Kiwanis is located at Mill Avenue and All-America Way.

2010-04-19 16:19:47 - With just two weeks to go to the Family Fun Day taking place at Whirlowbrook Hall on 2 May, staff and organisers have confirmed a host of new events and attractions for people to enjoy on the day.

The new confirmed acts include live entertainment by Laine Elliot provided by Rhythm of your Choice, and live demonstrations by the Sheffield Woodturning group, who cannot wait to turn wood for charity! The Sheffield Tai Chi Group will enable you to learn this relaxing art from the professionals, with visitors welcome to simply enjoy the performance – or why not

take part! Plus local PGA professional golfer Adam McCabe will be giving a master class and guidance on perfecting your swing.

Whirlowbrook Hall opens its doors for the fun day from 10.30am until 4.00pm. The Fair will provide plenty of opportunity to visit food stalls, and taste the delicious food available from the local café and (weather permitting!) sample the venue's very own BBQ, ice-creams and much, much more. With live music throughout the day, entertainment from magicians, face painting and a bouncy castle – this is an opportunity not to be missed to enjoy a great day out with the family.

Entry is FREE and free parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis, although the team at Whirlowbrook Hall is also encouraging the public to consider using public transport as an eco-friendly option, as several bus services will be running on the day. These include the 65 and 215 (TM Travel) and the 30 and 272 (First), but visitors are advised to check with Travel South Yorkshire for further details.

Philippa Debono, sales and marketing manager at Whirlowbrook Hall and sister hotel the Maynard, said: "Preparations are well underway now and it is going to be a great day on the 2 May. In addition to the traditional attractions, we will also have some 'soapboxes' on display to give people a taster of the Soapbox Derby we are planning for the end of September.

We would love businesses to get involved and submit a team for the soapbox derby in aid of Cavendish Cancer Care, and this event in May will give people the opportunity to see what it is all about and hopefully get involved.

One of the day's many highlights will be a performance from Unbeatable Energy, who will be looking for volunteers to help them for an exciting workshop in the park involving African drums. They will be playing from 2.30 until 3.15, followed by their grand finale performance to bring the curtain down on what looks set to be a perfect day for all the family.

"All of us at Whirlowbrook Hall are really looking forward to the fun day now and we are just hoping the weather does not let us down," added Philippa. "With the drums, golf, bouncy castles, stalls and soap boxes its going to be an action packed day, but at least everyone taking part will have the May Day Bank Holiday to recover!"

Just five miles from Sheffield city centre, Whirlowbrook Hall is set in its own rolling landscaped gardens and the Family Fun Day will be offering a selection of local products for sale, as well as the various entertainment on offer so it is one not to be missed.
