Island families are invited to participate in the annual Kona Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Kealakehe High School. The event will provide a forum for strengthening the family unit with a host of free activities, such as inflatable play centers, cotton candy and popcorn, live entertainment, lunch, exhibits featuring play activities for children, and health screenings for all attendees.

A collaboration of multiple organizations and individuals, the Kona Family Fun Day is expected to draw nearly 2,500 attendees. New this year, The Queen's Medical Center will celebrate its 150th anniversary by providing free health and wellness information, interactive games and activities, and health screenings. Queen's will also highlight the Queen's Health Care Centers Kona Specialty Clinic as well as Queen's Heart, Queen's Cancer Center, and Queen's Orthopedic & Spine Center, among many of it's other service lines that will be present at the event.

According to Wally Lau, Hawaii County Office of the Mayor, "The Family Fun Day was started by committed community organizations over 10 years ago and is meant to celebrate families, do fun things as a family and to provide resources available to families in the community."

Last year, the Kona Family Fun Day attracted over 1,800 people and it hopes to draw near 2,500 at this year's event. Family Fun Day is a model example of great community activities that can occur when multiple organizations and individuals collaborate with their resources.

Some of the key supporters this year include the North Kona Schools Complex 21st Century Learning Centers, Kealakehe Complex schools and their principals, The Queen's Medical Center, Family Support Services of West Hawaii, Hawaii County Office of the Mayor, and Pacific Radio Group.

About the Sponsors:

21st Century Learning Centers is a consortium of after school programs offered at the five Kealakehe Complex schools Kealakehe High, Intermediate and Elementary Schools, Kona Community Adult School, and Holualoa and Kahakai Elementary Schools. A rich variety of afterschool programs are offered free of charge at these various sites. Information and demonstrations of many of these programs will be available at the family fun day.

The Queen's Medical Center (QMC) was founded in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawaii. QMC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, acute care medical facility accredited by The Joint Commission. Queen's has achieved Magnet status the highest institutional honor for hospital excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet recognition is held by less than five percent of hospitals in the United States. Queen's is the first hospital in Hawai'i to achieve Magnet status.
