Getting your veggies: Gardening made simple

Going back to a time when vegetable gardening was just a way of life, a new book takes a traditional look on a trendy subject.

"Raised-Bed Vegetable Gardening Made Simple," by Raymond Nones ($15.95, The Countryman Press) is just that: a bare-bones guide on how to make a plentiful vegetable garden. It will be released April 19.

"I was born and raised in a small village amid the hills and hollows of western Pennsylvania. Back then, times were hard, jobs were few, money was scarce and everyone bought their groceries on credit ," writes the octogenarian in his preface.

Now, Nones is an urban gardener, living in Queens, N.Y., where he rediscovered gardening in his small backyard.

Here, he offers advice on the basics of gardening, such as picking a location, mulching and cultivating; and he goes into depth on more advanced gardening subjects, such as crop rotation, composting and saving and storing seeds.

Here are Nones' tips on finding a good location for your raised-bed garden:

1. Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine. This cannot be stressed enough the garden must be where it will get a minimum of six to eight hours of sunlight a day.

2. Good air circulation. It helps plants breathe, grow better, and helps prevent diseases. Avoid any sites too closed in.

3. Drainage. When it rains, check to see whether there are any areas where the water puddles up. Stay away from those

places if you can.

4. Keep it close. It should not be too far away from the house or a water supply. Otherwise, it will probably be neglected.

Family fun: Summer program

By JAMES D. WATTS JR. World Scene Writer

Bartlesville: It's the people you know

Two Bartlesville museums — the Price Tower Arts Center and the Bartlesville Area History Museum — are collaborating on a special summer program for students ages 9 to 12.

"These Are the People in Your Neighborhood" will take place June 28-July 9. The program is limited to 20 students, and early registration is encouraged.

Cost is $130 per student and includes a year's membership to both museums.

The program, said Cynthia Naylor, education coordinator for Price Tower Arts Center, "will introduce children to people who were important to the history of Bartlesville. They will research information about a person they choose, provide written work about their contribution to the city, and then create original artwork about the personality they select."

Morning sessions will take place at the Bartlesville Area History Museum, with afternoon sessions at Price Tower Arts Center.

Deadline to register is May 1. For more information or for a registration packet, call Naylor at (918) 336-4949, ext. 117, or Kay Little at the Bartlesville Area History Museum at (918) 338-4293.
