Kelsey Boyce believes there are few opportunities for communities to just come together and learn from one another -- whether it's about what others are doing or what they aspire to accomplish.

That's why 18-year-old Boyce, the senior youth group president at the Gladwin Church of the Nazarene, hopes the third annual Spring Fling and Family Fun Fair will draw a record amount of families this year.

The event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will take place at the Gladwin Community Arena, 402 James Robertson Drive, and is free and open to the public. It will feature more than 40 vendors, a variety of games, live entertainment, a silent auction, bake sale and craft show.

"It's a fellowship that really brings a community together," Boyce said. "It's a time where everyone can come together and not only celebrate spring but also meet people and see what they do."

New this year is an expanded Easter egg hunt scheduled at 11 a.m. for children ages 2 to 11.

"We wanted more families to come out and have fun at an event that's free," Boyce said. "We decided to have the Easter egg hunt at the Spring Fling this year in hopes that we'll attract even more people."

Pastor Mark Boyce said proceeds from the event will help the church's youth group participate in an international mission trip next summer.

"We think it's important for our young people to realize that we live in a global world and we really take a lot for granted here in the U.S.," he said. "It can be a life-changing event for them to help others around the world. At the same time, they are involved in our own community through this event."

Organizers hope to see 500 people at Saturday's event.

"The Spring Fling really is a great time for everyone," Mark Boyce said. "We have a ton of activities going on for children and families throughout the entire day."
