| Day full of family fun will be Saturday - Star-Press Posted: 20 Apr 2010 10:43 AM PDT MUNCIE -- The fourth annual Spring Zing will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday on Walnut Street in downtown Muncie. This year's event will focus on ways for parents to explore children's interests through activities that can be enjoyed in Muncie all summer long. Local organizations and businesses that provide activities, classes, camps, programs or outing opportunities during the summer are encouraged to join us as we inspire parents and entice children to enjoy Muncie during their summer break. Groups who engage children in mind and body fitness, environmental fun, sports and competition, spiritual enrichment or cultural and arts programs should take advantage of this opportunity to promote their summer activities. A youth talent show, Solutions BMX stunt bike team demo, Toys Forever remote- control toy demo, kite flying, games and activities will be featured throughout the day. Organizations, business, political candidates and food vendors who would like to participate in this year's event can access vendor forms and information at www.munciedowntown.com or by calling Cheryl Crowder at Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, 282-7897 Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Family Fun Activities for Earth Day - Associated Content Posted: 20 Apr 2010 08:20 AM PDT These family fun activities can really be done any time of the year, but Earth Day is the perfect excuse to go green and have fun together as a family. The great news is that many of these ideas can become good habits to practice all year. Enjoy a 100-mile meal. What is a 100-mile meal? The idea is to create a whole meal completely from foods that are raised within a 100-mile radius of your home. For some families like ours, this is easily doable as free-range chicken, grass-fed beef, farm-fresh eggs, local honey and a myriad of fruits and vegetables are available within a few miles of our home. In some areas, the hunt may be more challenging but it can be a fun and rewarding endeavor to research. What you learn for your Earth Day 100-mile meal can serve your family well all year. I'd love to hear about your local finds through comments or messages. Greening by spring cleaning. It's awesome that Earth Day is celebrated in the spring when the Earth is blossoming anew and we are inspired to do spring cleaning. Pick one group of items in your home that need to find new homes. For example, if your kids play sports, you probably have lots of sports equipment around that they no longer use. Add that unused equipment to the spring-cleaning pile. There are several ways you can find new homes for your sports equipment, whether through giving it to charity, trading it in or selling it. No matter what the items you round up for Earth Day, you can: - Donate it to another family - Donate it to an organization that can use it (such as a youth organization) - Donate it to an organization that can sell it (such as Good Will) - Sell or trade it in at a consignment or specialty shop - Sell it on eBay or Craigslist. Host an unplugged family night. An unplugged family night can be a lot of fun. You can keep it simple and make the ground rules no television, no stereo and no computer. Instead, let everyone come up with a list of those things you enjoy but don't often make time for. Here are a few ideas to consider: - Play a board game or card game - Play the piano, guitar, violin or any instrument available - Play charades - Enjoy hobbies such as knitting or scrapbooking Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | My Gym Children's Fitness Center Kicks off National ... - PR-USA.net (press release) Posted: 19 Apr 2010 08:10 PM PDT My Gym Children's Fitness Center will participate in the annual National Fitness Month fitness awareness campaign with its own Family Fun & Fitness Day, a day designated for kids and their families.
| Scheduled to take place Saturday, May 1, My Gym's Family Fun & Fitness Day is part of its national awareness program to help combat the rising epidemic of childhood obesity. My Gym locations nationwide will participate in National Family Fitness Day with specially-designed, age-appropriate fitness activities, interactive materials, enrollment discounts and special offers throughout the Open House event. (Participation, offers and specific hours may vary -- please visit www.mygym.com and check local My Gym for details). "My Gym's Family Fun & Fitness Day reflects My Gym's commitment to bringing children a world of fun, fitness and good health," said Matt Hendison, chief marketing & entertainment officer for My Gym. "We also applaud the First Lady's high profile campaign to solve the childhood obesity epidemic. It takes awareness and a proactive commitment to make it happen, and we hope this year's event will serve as a positive beginning for families across the country." According to the latest childhood obesity statistics from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, "an estimated 16 percent of children and adolescents ages 6-19 years are overweight" -- and even more are at risk of becoming overweight. It is clear from reviewing childhood obesity statistics that childhood obesity has been increasing the last 30 years, Hendison said. This is why so many health experts talk about the childhood obesity epidemic. Joining My Gym as a primary sponsor of My Gym Family Fun & Fitness Day is Azul Hotels, by Karisma (http://www.karismahotels.com), a 5-star family friendly Gourmet Inclusive hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico that will be offering one family a chance to win a 4-day, 3-night stay. Families can enter the day of the event only by filling out entry forms at participating My Gym locations. In addition to serving as a fitness awareness initiative, Family Fun & Fitness Day is also a fundraising event benefiting The My Gym Challenged America Foundation (www.challengedamerica.com).
