SHERMAN OAKS, CA--(Marketwire - April 19, 2010) -  My Gym Children's Fitness Center will participate in the annual National Fitness Month fitness awareness campaign with its own Family Fun & Fitness Day, a day designated for kids and their families.

Scheduled to take place Saturday, May 1, My Gym's Family Fun & Fitness Day is part of its national awareness program to help combat the rising epidemic of childhood obesity. My Gym locations nationwide will participate in National Family Fitness Day with specially-designed, age-appropriate fitness activities, interactive materials, enrollment discounts and special offers throughout the Open House event. (Participation, offers and specific hours may vary -- please visit www.mygym.com and check local My Gym for details).

"My Gym's Family Fun & Fitness Day reflects My Gym's commitment to bringing children a world of fun, fitness and good health," said Matt Hendison, chief marketing & entertainment officer for My Gym. "We also applaud the First Lady's high profile campaign to solve the childhood obesity epidemic. It takes awareness and a proactive commitment to make it happen, and we hope this year's event will serve as a positive beginning for families across the country."

According to the latest childhood obesity statistics from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, "an estimated 16 percent of children and adolescents ages 6-19 years are overweight" -- and even more are at risk of becoming overweight. It is clear from reviewing childhood obesity statistics that childhood obesity has been increasing the last 30 years, Hendison said. This is why so many health experts talk about the childhood obesity epidemic.

Joining My Gym as a primary sponsor of My Gym Family Fun & Fitness Day is Azul Hotels, by Karisma (http://www.karismahotels.com), a 5-star family friendly Gourmet Inclusive hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico that will be offering one family a chance to win a 4-day, 3-night stay. Families can enter the day of the event only by filling out entry forms at participating My Gym locations.

In addition to serving as a fitness awareness initiative, Family Fun & Fitness Day is also a fundraising event benefiting The My Gym Challenged America Foundation (www.challengedamerica.com). For more information, visit www.mygym.com.

NEW ATTRACTIONS CONFIRMED FOR WHIRLOWBROOK HALL FAMILY ... - PR Inside

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 07:17 AM PDT

2010-04-19 16:19:47 - With just two weeks to go to the Family Fun Day taking place at Whirlowbrook Hall on 2 May, staff and organisers have confirmed a host of new events and attractions for people to enjoy on the day.

The new confirmed acts include live entertainment by Laine Elliot provided by Rhythm of your Choice, and live demonstrations by the Sheffield Woodturning group, who cannot wait to turn wood for charity! The Sheffield Tai Chi Group will enable you to learn this relaxing art from the professionals, with visitors welcome to simply enjoy the performance – or why not

take part! Plus local PGA professional golfer Adam McCabe will be giving a master class and guidance on perfecting your swing.

Whirlowbrook Hall opens its doors for the fun day from 10.30am until 4.00pm. The Fair will provide plenty of opportunity to visit food stalls, and taste the delicious food available from the local café and (weather permitting!) sample the venue's very own BBQ, ice-creams and much, much more. With live music throughout the day, entertainment from magicians, face painting and a bouncy castle – this is an opportunity not to be missed to enjoy a great day out with the family.

Entry is FREE and free parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis, although the team at Whirlowbrook Hall is also encouraging the public to consider using public transport as an eco-friendly option, as several bus services will be running on the day. These include the 65 and 215 (TM Travel) and the 30 and 272 (First), but visitors are advised to check with Travel South Yorkshire for further details.

Philippa Debono, sales and marketing manager at Whirlowbrook Hall and sister hotel the Maynard, said: "Preparations are well underway now and it is going to be a great day on the 2 May. In addition to the traditional attractions, we will also have some 'soapboxes' on display to give people a taster of the Soapbox Derby we are planning for the end of September.

We would love businesses to get involved and submit a team for the soapbox derby in aid of Cavendish Cancer Care, and this event in May will give people the opportunity to see what it is all about and hopefully get involved.

One of the day's many highlights will be a performance from Unbeatable Energy, who will be looking for volunteers to help them for an exciting workshop in the park involving African drums. They will be playing from 2.30 until 3.15, followed by their grand finale performance to bring the curtain down on what looks set to be a perfect day for all the family.

"All of us at Whirlowbrook Hall are really looking forward to the fun day now and we are just hoping the weather does not let us down," added Philippa. "With the drums, golf, bouncy castles, stalls and soap boxes its going to be an action packed day, but at least everyone taking part will have the May Day Bank Holiday to recover!"

Just five miles from Sheffield city centre, Whirlowbrook Hall is set in its own rolling landscaped gardens and the Family Fun Day will be offering a selection of local products for sale, as well as the various entertainment on offer so it is one not to be missed.

To find out more about the Family Fun Day or the Soapbox Challenge, call Whirlowbrook Hall now on 0114 221 3003 or see the website at www.whirlowbrookhall.co.uk/soapbox for further details.

Building sense of community focus of YMCA's Family Fun ... - FortWayne.com

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 05:29 AM PDT

How far can a bonded community go toward changing an unfavorable perception of an entire city quadrant?

Some residents of the city's southeast side have high hopes.

The Old Fort YMCA at 2221 Reed St., which will soon become the refurbished Renaissance Pointe YMCA, is holding monthly community events meant to bring in kids and families and, ultimately, prove to the other three-quarters of the city that despite higher rates of homicides and certain other types of crime that plague the area, the actions of a few do not define every person.

The events are simple, perhaps, featuring hot dogs and hamburgers, face painting and jump roping, but with some 200 attending Saturday's Family Fun Day event, apparently residents are paying attention.

"What this does is helps to rid that perception of violence and crime," said Ebony Young, executive director or the Old Fort YMCA. "There's no violence here today. There's no crime here today. Just happiness and joy and fun and kids and fathers and families. We're ridding perceptions."

Lisa Ramirez is on board. She brought her three children to Saturday's event to get them involved in their community in the hopes it might have a bigger effect in the long run.

Ramirez, who teaches parenting classes, said it is paramount for families to be families, and events like Family Fun Day can go a long way to helping the cause.

"I wish Fort Wayne had more events like this," said Ramirez, watching her son get his face painted. "It's very important for parents to get involved with their kids instead of letting them run the streets, doing whatever."

The event, apart from the numerous fun activities for youth, provided several information booths about services throughout the city.

Linda Lymon-Mitchell came with her niece and nephew for just that reason. She praised the event for providing a place for a community to build relationships.

"It's a nice event for a community to do together," said Lymon-Mitchell. "It's fun to bring the kids out; they've got some good events for them."

But can such an event help to build up the area?

"I think it would be important for each and every community, but especially this one," said Lymon-Mitchell.

Whether these Family Fun Days, and events like them, are effective in changing negative perceptions will only be known over time. But, in the meantime, residents are having fun.

"We're really excited about bonding and bridging cultures," said Young. "A bonded community brings a plethora of knowledge, and knowledge is important for people to grow. This will bring about a lot of knowledge and fun for people."
